G8 Genoa

Dure lezioni da Genova and a proposal to the White Overalls

There was an eloquent scene Friday, July 20 (The Day of Action) to Piazza Dante, Genoa, bordering the Red Zone (an area enclosed by a barrier of security for G8). The contrast with the noise, confusion and the potential for violence immediately prior to the protesters was singularly dramatic and perhaps even for the police. Unfortunately an error in the organization broke this change of atmosphere when a group of old-style Communists, the Socialist Worker's Party, came suddenly shouting slogans, beating rhythmically and shouting, with the general climate of hostility toward the police that followed. What is the force behind this alternative?

From Seattle to Prague to Gothenburg the problem of violence is often almost completely dominated all discussion of the merits of anti-globalization movement. From street fights, in this age of sound-bytes and images, Protestants seem to play the part of broadcasters, reporters and officials who find it easy to deflect public attention from more important topics. And Genoa, the largest part of the debate seems to focus almost exclusively on the impending conflict between the various groups of antagonists.
So the most important issue for the movement against globalization is like stepping into the streets of Genoa without losing Our new voice in the cloud of tear gas or, as in Gothenburg, to risk the blood and possibly death. What strategies, then, that we can serve you better? What can respond to the urgency and sincerity of the young and people just wanting to express their outrage and commitment to protest.

The Genoa Social Forum, the All Blank and others have publicly stated a strategy which aims on entering the Red Zone. There are many voices that demand the total loss of the G8 summit. Come lui propose, se ci indirizziamo alla psicologia, i bisogni e le paure dei nostri oppositori (mai "nemici" - Gandhi mantenne sempre un rispetto reciproco nelle sue lotte), potremmo arrivare ad una strategia che funziona.

Da Berlusconi in poi, quelli dei G8 credono veramente che stanno percorrendo la strada giusta, e sono anche convinti della necessità di garantire che la riunione dei G8 vada avanti e che il (suo) governo mantiene il (suo) ordine.
Per quanto riguarda la polizia ed i soldati, loro vogliono sopratutto seguire gli ordini (è quello il loro lavoro), non dimostrare la paura o la disubbedienza verso i loro colleghi/compagni, e neppure verso i manifestanti. Crediamo che preferiscono evitare gli scontri, se non vengono provocati.
